The Virus Week Chronicles:
Viruses Plaguing SRU (in order of most annoying)
- Nachi Worm
- Blaster virus
- Lovsan (we don't have it but it motivated the creation of Nachi)
- So Big (we don't have this either but it's more serious than Nachi and is easier to pronounce so everyone asks if we are fixing that and I say no and they somehow lose most of the sympathy they would have had for me)
What I have done as an RNA
- Faced a residence hall alone with a patch and mcaffee at my side
- Swept whole academic labs with a team of people
- Attacked floors in teams, gone door to door
- Keyed into rooms to patch PCs
- Developed a "manual" method of virus removal
What I have learned
- Anti-virus FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!1111
- I am personally responsible for fixing the internet...so says teh n00bs
- People who make good "viruses" get no satisfaction what so ever
- The type of enthusiasm exibited for the field of IT that I have seen would have been non-existant 15, 10, or even 5 years ago
stupid..STUPID people
- As I installed a patch the other day a guy says "you know, when they come and fix your computer like that.. they just do stuff so they can watch what you're doing"
- As I left a dis-infected computer "so does the internet work now? why? listen, can't you just make mine? I have a paper due soon."
- As I fixed a computer "You aren't installing things are you?"
- "This goddam (mcaffe) disk gave my computer a virus! Yeah I have norton too. Why?"
- "What if I don't want you to fix my computer?"
- Voice mail "when will the internet be back?" delete. Next message "when will the internet be back?" "when will the internet be back?" "when will the internet be back?" "when will the internet be back?" "when will the internet be back?" "when will the internet be back?" "when will the internet be back?" "when will the internet be back?" "when will the internet be back?" "when will the internet be back?" "when will the internet be back?"
What it all means
What this all means is this: I have worked a bunch of hours that I will probably never get any compensation for. The rest of campus will never truely be greatful of my work because they all think that "some computer guy" like me made the virus in the first place. I've had a pretty stressful week as you can probably tell, but it's all good. Hopefully I'll have internet access tomorrow. Yay! I've also got a new appreciation for the air conditioning in bard hall, it was sweltering in those other buildings. Lastly, this has been a learning experience for me and there's one platitude that has taken on new meaning for me and I will always follow; Always Use Protection. Also remember; Virus Free is the Way to Be.
